As Enrico (the manager) always says: "Tranquillo" (don't worry......be happy)
We chose Posada La Lagunita for our first visit to Los Roques, based on website and price (and Lonely Planet with a grain of salt).
The up side to this B&B was friendly and organized staff. The guests, all European save ourselves (Americans), which seemed commonplace around the island, also were pleasant, which was important, since we ate family-style and were sent off on our daily boat excursions together. The Italian home-style cooking was fine. The rooftop "lounge" was nice. There was some satellite TV and wifi availability. However, this B&B is by no means luxurious. The rooms are clean and have full baths, but they are basic, with only fitful protection from the mosquitos despite window-box air-conditioning. The public space is small and lacks any mosquito protection or special amenities for guests.
Given that everything on Los Roques is costly and difficult because it must be brought in, La Lagunita is a good value and may be the best choice for those of us wanting a place in-between backpackers' lodgings and upscale inns. However, it would be a poor choice for a very lengthy stay, or a rainy period, or for anyone needing comfort or suffering from claustrophobia. Furthermore, be advised that the method of payment is set up for Europeans, not Americans.
My boyfriend and I researched quite a bit before going to Los Roques. I was happy to go to Posada Lagunita because they gave us 100% great service from the very begining. I recommend paying the 'full board' which cost a bit more (low season: € 80.00, high season:
€ 85.00) but makes a difference. The food was delicious and fresh! If you go to their website www.posadalagunita.com it will tell you in detail about everything (food, board & boat rides to island)
Just be ready to do a wire transfer when you are ready make a reservation because all posadas requires a deposit. No credits cards are accepted for reservations. Andrea is the owner of the hotel and Alex the manager who you will meet at the time of arrival on the airport. La Posada Lagunita will also reserve your flight on Blue Star, a private aeroline with only 8 passangers on board. It will be a great flight with beautiful views the islands. You will be impressed with the small airport when you arrived. Please note that in Caracas national airport people will not be familiar with Blue Star since it's a small private line. Do not be alarmed, just go to the counter at the very end of the airport and Blue Star personel will be there an hour or so before the flight.
Unique Qualities: The rooms are very clean and beds are comfortable. Air conditioning are in all rooms. The terrace on the top is great to relax and have a few drinks that they provide you when you get the full board (wine, soda, beer and water as much as you want) Los Roques is a very romatic place and you feel at home in this Posada Lagunita.
Chose this inn based on their web site which looked very enticing. Total disappointment. Mediocre to indifferent food served family style and never quite enough. Unattractive, cheaply built and not well maintained accomodations, not much above pre-teen summer camp.
They try but the basics are not there.
My wife and I stayed 4 nights here on our honeymoon in March. The place was clean and neat, but not "posh" by any standards. However, we knew going in that we would be "roughing it" a little bit (which is why we chose this as opposed to something like Sandals).
The staff was easily the best part of the stay, and while we didn't know much Spanish or Italian, we conversed well enough through other couples there (towards the end of our stay, Enrico said through another visitor, "even though I can't understand them and they can't understand me, I love them and they love me").
A normal day:
8-9: wake up and have breakfast at the table where all meals are taken
10: go to the pier with a guy from from the posada, who carries our coolers with lunches (fruit, candy wafer snacks, water, soda, beer, entree usually fish and rice) and the umbrella and chairs; we brought a sheet to put down so we could lounge.
11-4: island time (in March, the sun was really hot, but the shade was remarkably cool) and we loved wandering on the smaller island we went to. The populated islands are close (5-15 min ride) but we went to a really far one (1.5 hrs ride in really choppy water) and it was great there but the ride back was hellish because the water had gotten considerably worse than earlier. If I had to choose, I'd probably do only a 30 min ride out so the ride back would only be an hour.
5: cocktail hour--best time of the day. Drinks upstairs and little snacks. Afterward we would wander the island, now about 75 degrees outside, barefoot and clean but radiating heat from the sun earlier. There were some posada's on the waterfront that we would get drinks at, sitting in beanbags on the sand and watching the sun go down.
7: Dinner at the big table with everyone staying in the posada (about 12-20). 4 courses: a salad of sorts, usually an awesome fresh fish or shrimp dish, a pasta dish, and a unique dessert. And always great bread and tasty wine.
8-10: After dinner drinks upstairs. Coffee with rum. Here, as during cocktail hour and dinner, it was awesome to get to know other people staying. They were from South America, Italy, and the States.
shower head is an open pipe and the water isn't hot, but really felt great and was a wonderful time to share with my new wife!
small room, no space for storage, but we didn't need much anyway
small bed, a double, but plenty comfortable
heat of sun; we had to reapply sunscreen every hour in midday
a wonderful air conditioner; our room was always 70--day and night.
awesome ice cream shop in town
terrible tourist gifts, nothing really locally made, but a few crafts (and cuban cigars at one of the posadas)
Very Important note on the transfer to/from the island:
Since we were arriving late in Venezuela, I set up to be met at the airport by someone known by the owner of the posada. He booked a room for us (which was closed because the late hour) but did not leave us be. I already had another booking so we just went there, but there are plenty of hotels and he knew all the best ones. I had no idea he would be making such reservations for us. The following morning he picked us up and took us back to the airport and took care of everything there, transferring care of us to a lady who worked at the airport. We were briefly worried we weren't in the right place, but at the right time, she showed back up and took us to a little plane out on the strip (10 seater overhead, twin prop). On the return, the same guy transferred us, since we were staying another night outside the international airport. He took us to the nicest hotel in the area, where we had reservations (every room was booked) and again picked us up in the morning right on time. We paid him $20 both ways, but it was well worth it having our own taxi who knew the area and took great care of us. The nicer hotel was around $100/night and the other half of that.
I spent eight days at Posada Lagunita and found it very enjoyable. Travellers to Los Roques are seeking something more special than the "service with a purchased smile" experience of a mega resort. Posada Lagunita offers seven nicely done rooms which offer tremendous value for the money. The food was amazing especially the dinners, which featured locally caught fish, cooked to perfection. There was never a shortage of wine and cold beer. The communal dinner table is great for conversation and meeting new friends from the world over. Breakfasts are tropical fruit, pancakes (they could have used some Canadian maple syrup) cold cuts, cheese and toasted country style bread, as well as endless coffee. They can fire up an espresso for you as well.
The excursions on offer are great and the closest ones to Franciski and Madriski were included. We had a fcouple of rainy days in October (a rarity) and this made excursions impossible, so the owner comped a day trip to Cayo de Agua, which was a tremendously nice thing to do. They give you a cooler with a pasta or seafood salad lunch, fruit, water, beer, pop for your excursions. Just help yourself to the fridge if you want to take along a few extra brewskis to Franciski. The day trips typically leave at 10 am and return at 5 but if you're going to the closer isles, they will pop back earlier and pick you up. They set you up for the day with a big umbrella, beach chair, towels, your cooler. The snorkelling is best at Franciski (sheltered cove, lots of good fish) and Madriski (big reef, though a bit of a swim to the fish).
The service is warm and hospitable and attentive. Andrea and his wife Claudia are great hosts and Chicho is the hardest working man in Los Roques, preparing the beverages for the happy hour at 730 pm lovely rooftop deck, or hustling people to and from the boat or the plane.
This is a great little place to go and if you come you will be justly rewarded with many pleasant travel memories.
My girlfirend and I went to Los Roques for 1 week to chill out, windsurf and enjoy the nice beaches. We bought the flight tickets for los roques at the caracas airport. Dont do that. Let Andrea (the posada owner) help you book it through him. He helped us a lot and is a super friendly guy. The posada is very nice and clean and has a chilled beach atmosphere. The other guy working toghether with Andrea is Enrico. Another italian and also very friendly guy who contribuetes alot to the nice atmosphere there.
Almost no posadas at los roques are located at the beach and they are all "full board" deals. The reason why is beacause there is almost no reastaurants there so if you go for a bed and breakfast, you will have to spend alot more money. The "full board" option at lagunita includes all what you need. Pick up at airport (3min walk), breakfast, lunch to bring with you on the island that you want to go to, (some island trips are included in your full board option, others you need to pay for), dinner and drinks at the roof top. Here Carlos will make you some nice and strong carperinhas..
All in all we where very satisfied with lagunita. I higly recommend it. If you wonder about anything, ask Andrea. He is very helpful.
If you are interessted in windsuring og kitssurfing you can rent equiptment at the fransiski island. (free boat ride with return if you have full board. 5min boat ride). The you running the surf shop is a very chilled and friendly guy. He let me surf and pay another day.. THe prices are abit high, but you can bargain with him.
